When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower - Alexander Den Heijer. When I'm working, reading, watching t.v., or eating dinner, I like to sit in different spots where I'm comfortable. The same goes for students in a classroom. They might choose to sit at a desk, on top of their desk, under their desk, on the floor, on our book bench - wherever they are most comfortable! I think it's safe to say that it's difficult to stay engaged when you aren't comfortable. My students often get restless after sitting at their desks all day. Research shows that allowing students to sit in comfortable, flexible seating options greatly enhances their focus. I want to provide them with more flexible seating options. This simple fix will help students become comfortable in our classroom home and become more engaged in learning. Having alternative seating in our classroom home will allow students to make a choice of which seating arrangement is best for their learning. By giving them a choice I am helping them begin to learn how to make appropriate choices to make them more successful in the classroom. The wobble stools and convert-a-bench will be the perfect start to incorporating more seating options in our classroom. The bench can be used during our reading block and then flipped so students are able to use it for writing workshop. I love that this one item is so versatile.
