With so much controversy surrounding the teaching of Shakespeare, I believe that Shakespeare is a gift. Othello is a text with themes and plot lines that speaks to issues facing low income, minority students - wrongfully judging a person by their skin color, matters of race on a governmental level, interracial relationships, being betrayed by a friend, and the list goes on. Many of my kids don’t even own a book at home that is all theirs and I want them to have ownership over something with value: Othello by William Shakespeare. Some engaging lessons my students need a personal copy for are performances in small groups, annotation, translation exercises, and note-taking on differing performances on film. We will also put characters on trial, interview characters, and have circle discussions on themes in the text! As we act it out in class, I want the kids to bend back the copy to read their lines. I want them to make notes on how to read the line. I want them to make personal notes and emojis to connect with it in the margin. I want Othello to be PERSONAL!
