Students will have access to books which include topics that are meaningful to them and their everyday lives. For example, the book "Invisible Emmie" is about two characters who deal with embarrassment and speaking up, topics 6th graders deal with on a daily basis. Another book, "Half a World Away" deals with the subject of adoption and the power of love. Multiple genres are represented in the library including graphic novels and historical fiction; the collection will also include our state book award nominees. Topics of these books are important to 6th graders and include dealing with bullying, coping with the loss of a parent, and starting middle school. I have found that my reluctant and non-readers need books with high interest subject matter that is personally meaningful to them to ensure their engagement with books.
