My school is full of driven academically minded young people who have the potential to change the world. I am passionate about them becoming more connected to the world around them, and more understanding of the divisions that seem to exist in our society. I also want them to become stronger readers, and for that, they need practice. They need books that reflect who they are and their interests, while also pushing them to see the world outside our community. I've seen first hand how great literature creates empathetic and caring young people. This year, I've listened to seniors talk about books in a way they have not since their middle school days. They are talking about plot twists in class, creating lists of what they want to read next, and sharing their experiences with others in our school and at home. I have students from other grade levels happily invading my room asking for copies of The Hate U Give or I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. My classroom has become a hub of literacy and empathy in the way I always dreamed it would be, and there is so much more awesome potential if I just had more diverse books. I have already built a small library of my own of about 150 books, all from my own money. I scour used bookstores and look for bargains online. However, I can't keep up with the demand. I want my students to have the best books they can. And that's where you come in! Please help me create strong minded, empathic, and determined young readers and writers to change our world for the better and give them the library they so richly deserve.
