My students need specific items to help make our classroom a more sensory friendly environment. When given the chance to explore through their senses, a whole new world opens up to my students. However, we also hope to reduce some of the things in our room that may overstimulate the student and hinder their ability to learn. For example, we are requesting light filters that we hope will help to soften the brightness from the over head lights, giving my students a chance to actively participate in their learning without shutting their eyes or covering their faces. A sensory table will give my students the chance to enhance their sense of touch, something very crucial to sensory children, including those on the autism spectrum. They often seek out different textures to feel and rub across their hands and cheeks. "The most important thing people did for me was to expose me to new things" - Temple Grandin. My students will be exposed to new textures with the sensory table, allowing their sense of touch to blossom further. By shielding the harshness of the overhead lights, their sense of sight will be able to function to its fullest potential instead of over stimulating the student and affecting their ability to learn and engage in the classroom activities. This will enable my students to become more in touch with all five senses while exploring with them through play; communication skills blossom and social skills will be put to use while working through centers. Kinetic sand, washable sensory play items, colorful kidfetti, and speedy snow will give them many different opportunities explore to a variety of different textures. Having these items will also help fulfill the sensory needs of my students.
