I teach at an urban elementary school with a large population of two extremes. We have very affluent families with students who began kindergarten already reading and needing to be challenged from day one. We also have students from impoverished home environments who had no preschool experience and therefore started school already considered "below grade level" due simply to lack of experience. Our staff does an amazing job of meeting individual students exactly where they are and offering as much support as we can to develop skills needed. Our curriculum is project-based and promotes opportunities for students to work both independently and in cooperative learning groups. With that, it is a challenge to ensure resources are plentiful for all students to have what they individually need and to remain excited and enthusiastic about learning. It is imperative to reach all ability levels within each school day, to ensure no "group" is neglected.
