Many people think that picture books are primarily used in the kindergarten to grade 2 curriculum, but I strongly feel there is a need for continued exposure to picture books in the upper elementary grades. I have taught fourth grade my entire teaching career and I have built a library of many chapter books. I desperately need to expand my library to meet the needs of many learners and the use of these requested books will be a great addition to my class library. With your gracious donation, I will use these nonfiction tests that I have requested, in this case picture books related to content-area topics, as mentor texts. I can assure you that they will add great value and powerful advantages for my students. My kids have loved reading and analyzing picture books, as it is different than the typical "fourth grade" chapter books with very few visuals. The requested books will allow me to model various texts structures such as: cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, main ideas and details, context clues to determine word meaning, sequencing of events, and problem/solution. In recent years, I found picture books to very beneficial to all my students because they are focused. These types of books quickly identify plots and highlight specified reading or thinking skills. In a recent article I read by Keith Schoch, he simply stated, "While the same skill could be practiced in a novel, the shorter picture book provides a more controlled arena for examination and discussion."
