The Book Buddy program is a book sharing program designed to build relationships between students in our diverse building. Several sets of similarly themed books would be purchased for students to choose from. When a student chooses a book they will be “matched” up with another student who has the paired book. Ultimately, after comparing their character details, maybe- just maybe a match will be made and a friendship emerges. Book Buddy offers an alternative to social media strengths like connecting with like-minded peers, exchanging ideas or expanding friendships. Reading a book is still that timeless past-time that allows our student readers to relax, breathe, reflect, compare, relate, calm, visit other places, learn, grow and more. The Book Buddy program is a re-mixed book club that supports book loving students who want to read newer high interest, hard-copy, print books by having students “introduce a character” in their chosen book to another willing reader participant. The face-to-face interaction with fellow students would help students recover from the feelings of isolation created by the pandemic and the excessive screen time that was necessary during the nearly year long online learning format. Most students in our building still prefer to avoid the screen fatigue, eye strain, and social media/gaming distractions associated with reading books in a digital format- online or through an app. Frequently, students will prefer a print book over an e-book version. The program also supports the mission and purpose of the school library’s S.T.E.A.M. lounge & Innovation lab. This school-wide multisensory space was developed to support social-emotional growth and a variety of student learning activities to improve student’s academic achievement goals.
