High quality lesson plans are essential but without an environment that feels motivational and safe, students cannot achieve at their highest potential. For the last 12 years, I have been an elementary school principal but as I enter the last few years before retirement, I have decided that I'd like my career to go full circle so I am returning to the classroom! Despite my veteran status, it has been 15 years since I've had a self-contained classroom so I am starting from scratch with materials for my students. My school is about 80 years old and it shows. As such I would greatly appreciate the following items: --My new classroom in dire need of beautification so that children experience a homey and joyful learning space. For this reason I am requesting book storage containers because the condition of the library requires revamping so that it "calls" to my students! --As a former principal, I know the importance of creating safe learning environments therefore I would like to provide students with a "Peace Area" for those times when they might feel that they need a break if they are feeling upset/overwhelmed/etc. The timer, expandable breathing ball, and fidgets would be placed in that area to help them take a break and then rejoin their peers with a positive mindset. --As a "doodler" I can sympathize with the occasional need to do something with your hands while listening to someone talk. For this reason I would like to provide students with the fidget bubble toy. --The motivational posters in Spanish will also serve to beautify the gray walls with positive messages.
