Many of my 5 and 6 year old Kindergarten students are entering Kindergarten with very no or very little literacy exposure. We have a very high EL population, as well as many students living at or below the poverty line. Many students at our school are learning to speak English, learning to acclimate to a different culture, or are dealing with a family or living crisis at home. We try to make every minute that they are at school as safe, meaningful, and full of learning for these students, so that they are excited to come back to school everyday and learn!
