As a school counselor, it is my top priority to foster the tools and resources within our students so that they are able to self-regulate, express their emotions, and feel safe in the school environment. Often times, our emotions take over our brain and we have a hard time verbalizing and ensuring that our needs are being met. A sensory room, The Zen Den, within Bellwood Elementary School is a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. Lights, colors, sounds, sensory soft play objects, aromas, and a quiet space all within a safe environment that allows the student using it to explore and interact without risk. Our goal at Bellwood is to help students understand basic and complex emotions and to advocate and self-regulate for their needs when feeling overwhelmed by uncomfortable emotions.
