These students don't get a huge opportunity to play instruments during music class, because I don't have very many instruments. I have at this time 10 drums, with my smallest class size being 25. I feel that playing music is a huge part of musical expression, and without an adequate amount of instruments, the students can't experience this area of music. A lot of our students are kinesthetic learners and need to do something very hands on. Drumming will allow them to utilize their theoretical rhythmic knowledge through instrument playing. With the addition of these instruments, I will be able to teach my students a World Drumming curriculum. As part of this curriculum, students will learn songs from different cultures and other countries, while exercising their knowledge of rhythms. This will help the students connect to different cultures and also use all the musical tools they've been working on in music class.
