In the words of our native Disney villain, "It's the green [we] need." Even surrounded by rich culture and history depicted in "The Princess and the Frog," the children of this city face economic struggles that limit them from nurturing their creativity. After 5 years, we all are still enduring the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. The majority of the students come from low-income families and receive free lunch. Their parents cannot afford to buy instruments or music supplies. Some of them can barely afford regular school supplies. The school is now a charter and its culture revolves around standardized testing, thus having little to no resources for extracurricular activities. My music classes extend from Kindergarten through 8th grade. There has not been a music program at this school for some time. The only materials available are the ones I bring and it is not nearly enough for a decent music program.
