My students attend a Title I school in Hawaii where over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. We have an incredibly diverse classroom - my students come from places such as Japan, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, and Hawaii. My students also come from diverse home lives. Many have single-parent homes, some are homeless, and other students are in foster care. Despite these circumstances, they are extremely enthusiastic, energetic, and hard-working. Our class motto is "grow your brain" and my students embrace this wholeheartedly in everything that they do. From the beginning of the school year they have adopted an "I can" mindset. Even as first graders, many of them are already eager about their future as they work hard to get to college!
