Using the TED Talk by Ashanti Branch, students will create an identity mask and written explanation. The mask will show parts of their identity on the outside and they will paint feelings they repress on the inside. As an educator I believe it is important to provide students with the opportunity to explore their own identities and the parts of themselves they often repress or ignore. Essential Questions: 1. Can we share our authentic selves while negotiating the often rigid pressure of cultural roles? 2. There is surprising power in unveiling what we often hide, deny, repress or ignore. What if we showed the world what’s behind our masks?
