My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. Such diversity is not only seen in their race and socioeconomic status, but also in their family dynamics and support, and their emotional development. My students live in a historic neighborhood, with 70% receiving free and reduced lunches. They come from both two-parent and single-parent homes; some live with extended family, friends' families and some are in foster care. Despite such diversity, they are all growing young minds who need guidance and direction, whether given to them at home or at school. My students thrive when provided with love and support, and respect from others around them. Their desire to learn is only stifled by the stressors they face each day, the burdens they bring with them to school, and the struggles they keep hidden inside. Some of the challenges they face are greater than those we could ever imagine, and your support is essential!
