Because I teach both reading and writing, my students are expected-per education standards- to be able to use a dictionary to determine the meaning of unknown words. From the first day of the school year, I teach my seventh graders how to use a dictionary and encourage them to do so as much as possible. At first, they are hesitant, but eventually every student begins using the dictionary multiple times every day. Because, our classrooms are only given a limited number of used dictionaries, we wear them out quickly. I would love to have a new set to give my students the opportunity to continue practicing this life skill.
