In Southern California we get quite a diverse population in our classrooms. On one end of the spectrum, we have students who went to preschool for two years, attend one year of developmental kinder, and then start kindergarten. Then we have the opposite extreme of the spectrum, with a student whose parents just transferred in from a foreign country, who speaks limited English, but lives in the neighborhood and wants to attend school with their neighbors. Both students need to learn to read and to achieve to their highest potential in preparation for first grade. Our common core standards are the same for both students, yet the curriculum needs to be differentiated to suit their academic needs. By using leveled guided reading libraries that were founded on research based methods, teachers can accommodate the various learners in each classroom.
