I am passionate about getting my students to love English and to learn to read for pleasure. This idea was inspired by my own experience in high school when I found myself dreading English class. Although it was my favorite subject, the texts we read as a class were boring, outdated, not relatable, and dry. If the same content and standards had been taught using more relatable and interesting texts/novels, I am confident that many students would have loved coming to English class. In John Krakauer’s novel, students will read about the thrilling, firsthand account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. This tragic event killed eight climbers, stranding several several others by a rogue storm. Students won’t be able to put this book down. Not only is this book an action packed story of survival and the triumph of the human spirit, it is a great way to fulfill the Common Core and Arizona standardized assessments. I am confident that teaching this novel will turn reluctant English students to passionate, lifelong readers.
