Currently, we do not have a library and it makes it difficult to offer reading circles, silent sustained reading, or reading for pleasure without books. All of these activities are necessary if we are going to build better readers. I would like to offer reading circles in my classroom. In these reading circles, I would like kids to read books that are on similar topics that can be used to discuss things as characterization, imagery, and tone and mood. My students also participate in silent sustained reading on a weekly basis in class. My students read and and answer a journal entry which includes a summary, personal response, and literary analysis. I have many students that enjoy reading in their free time. At most public schools, libraries are available to fill this need. With out a library at our school to offer books to students, many have difficulty finding materials to read for pleasure during their free time. Obtaining a wider variety of books to add to my bookcase would improve the quality of the learning by offering more options to students for various reading activities. Students need the ability to choose books that are of interest to them while reading and building reading skills.
