Step into my small group Math session with my ELL students as they use these amazing manipulatives to have fun as they learn math. Having these manipulates readily available will allow them to have choice when it comes to solving problems. There's no substitute for firsthand experience when working with manipulatives to give students ways to construct physical models of abstract mathematical ideas. The math manipulatives and games will give my students confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning. With long-term use of manipulatives in math, as teachers we find that students make gains in the following areas: verbalizing mathematical thinking, working collaboratively, expressing problems and solutions using a variety of materials, and taking ownership of their learning experience.
