I teach juniors and seniors in a magnet high school in a large urban district. My main objective for my seniors is to inspire them to pursue science as a career. I came from a university to teach high school as a second career, and prepare the students with not only valuable lab skills but also the critical thinking and problem solving skills that are important in science. My students are all highly motivated, but since we are in a large urban public school district we often lack the materials to give authentic science experiences. I teach two science electives, Forensic Science and Microbiology aka Microbiohacking, and I teach from purely a laboratory standpoint. All lectures and additional content materials are on my website as podcasts and animated lectures that I have developed, which my students view outside of class and class time is used purely for experiments and discussions of projects and labs.
