To provide various structures of learning during class to meet a variety of student needs, I am requesting Kindle Fire Tablets for my students to use in physical education. Research states that to make the connection between STEM and 21st-century skills, students need to be exposed to technology in every class. In an age of data-driven and evidence-based instruction, the use of tablets in PE will meet this necessity and enhance student engagement and learning as we implement the new IL Enhanced PE Standards. With specific apps, students will be provided opportunities to: a) select teams/ groups efficiently and fairly; b) use timers to manage task completion; c) record themselves for self- and peer-assessment to improve and correct errors; d) see, practice, film, and assess activities; e) enter fitness and/or data scores to move quickly between activities; and, f) access health/fitness content online that will aid them in achieving resources for overall personal health, wellness, and fitness. Students will complete and submit daily steps, heart rate and skill/task assignments on the tablet to receive immediate reports regarding their performance, adjust execution of skills based on their results more efficiently so as to maximize physical activity time. They will also maintain an electronic portfolio of their work. The availability of tablets in PE will streamline class processes and routines and foster self-learning and collaboration among students. Additionally, its use will eliminate the daily clutter of paper and pencil use in the gym, which sometimes becomes a safety concern. Objectives, handouts, word walls, as well as other visual and auditory classroom tools will be displayed in the virtual PE classroom, which can be reviewed and revisited anywhere in the gym.
