As a Title I school in a high poverty area, it is my responsibility to bring more hands-on STEM activities into my students' lives. I want to be the teacher that opens these academic doors for my students; not the teacher that has to slam the door shut in their faces simply because we do not have the supplies we need in order to learn. My students love exploring and getting down and dirty into the world of science. Since we also learn math, these supplies are the perfect benefit for both subject areas! Many of my students do not have access to any supplies for math and science at their homes beyond their kitchen. In a time where technology reigns supreme, for this project I chose materials that would enrich my student's experiences with STEM. From SNAP circuit kits to Brain Flakes we will construct and participate in the engineering and designing processes. I chose to add several games to incorporate critical thinking and scientific prediction such as Mouse Trap, Kerplunk, and Don't Break the Ice. These will help develop simple skills that will later launch my students into more difficult conceptual thinking activities. Think Fun's Roller Coaster Kit is something the students are really looking forward to using if we get funded. Studying force and motion is a great interest to them! I also listed many basic STEM supplies we need such as Play Dough, rubber bands, craft sticks, and STEM personal notebooks. By also listing teacher resource workbooks on STEM, I can find the latest trends and activities to give to my students! If funded, I truly feel that these supplies can help my students gain understanding of our Texas science and math curriculum by helping me provide a more hands-on engaging classroom experience.
