I have a room of 21 energetic first graders. 14 boys and 7 girls, so the energy level in even higher than average. They need fast-paced instruction that also keeps them interested and engaged with the material. Today's students are very familiar with technology and media and already know how to interact with it. Therefore, using the i-Pad minis in class would give them something familiar to work with while drawing them in and getting them engaged in their learning. I would encase the i-Pad minis in shockproof silicon to protect them when they occasionally get dropped. We are at a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) school, so everyone assumes we have all kinds of technology. Not true; we need updated and current technology for our students that can operate fast enough to keep the students interested. The more experience I can give my first graders with 21st century technology, the more prepared they will be to continue successfully in school and in their future.
