These books are going to help me, as the reading specialist, put my words into action. When trying to inspire children to read more, write more, make deeper connections to texts they read, I need books with more diverse characters and backgrounds that will mirror a wider variety of readers in my school. Greater book choices allow my students to come in contact with people who are just like them and better yet, people who are very different. Studies show that coming in contact with people who are "different" helps reduce stereotypes. Book choice is important to help get my young readers engaged and hooked on reading at a very young age. Diversity in books is critical in supporting students to connect to people with similarities to themselves and their lives, as well as learn about people who might be different while learning different doesn't mean bad.
