My project involves using technology to close the Achievement Gap between rich and poor students by bringing one-on-one technology into the classroom. A set of classroom laptops would allow me to provide my students with individualized learning and online teaching aids, that are comparable to that of affluent communities. With limited school funds, my digital literacy goals can not be realized because my students do not have access to the necessary technology tools (laptops, iPads, Internet, etc) on a daily basis. A study from Michigan State University psychologist Linda Jackson, PhD (2006 Developmental Psychology), found that children who used the Internet more had higher scores on standardized reading tests after six months, and their grade point averages were also higher than those children who used it less. My goal is to show students, parents, and fellow teachers the academic rewards of digital learning.
