My second and third graders have developed a love for literature. Unfortunately, our class sets of core literature are limited so we are looking to expand our selections. Some of the key skills students develop during our readings include: being able to ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of details in a text. Retelling stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determining their main message, lesson, or moral. Lastly, describing how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. These class sets will be used year after year and will benefit many future scholars. Donations to this project will give elementary students more opportunities to indulge themselves in good literature as they become fluent readers and expand their vocabulary and comprehension. We also need storage boxes to store them in.
