In the past we have used homemade models to allow students to expand on their knowledge of watersheds and wetlands. These models have encouraged students to explore how important wetlands are to a healthy water system by filtering out rural and urban pollution. However, they homemade models are not very durable and have to be remade every year.
Next year, we would like to give the students the same hands on experience with more durable models that can be used year after year. The Make Your Own Watershed Kit will encourage students to explore the way pollution impacts a water system without wasting any time trying to get the homemade kit to work. In the past, the modeling clay, Monopoly houses, and plastic farm animals that ultimately do not stay in place long enough for students to reach desired outcomes end up wasting time that could be better spent learning.
We are asking for funds for this project now as we (the teachers) will need to paint the kits over the summer so that they will be ready to use during our first unit, Hydrosphere, in the fall. Although it is an expensive project, we are confident that the fund from this project will reach students for years to come.
