While you or I may not be able to imagine a home with children but no books, that is a reality for many of my students. When asked what they read at home, a shocking number of my students respond by saying that they have no books to read. In a low income area of Houston, 86% of students at my school are classified as economically disadvantaged. Their home environments aren't always stable, parents often don't have much time to spend with them, nor can they afford extensive home libraries. I do my best to create for them a safe, welcoming environment that they can look forward to each day. We behave and interact as a family. I reaffirm to them daily that they are the best class, and that they can reach their dreams and achieve goals they set for themselves. And I teach my students using authentic literature on a daily basis in my classroom.
