My students attend an Alternative Education public high school in California. They are labeled as the "bad kids," and internalize this stigma even though it isn't true. They are all wonderful, unique, and intelligent teenagers who just want to know that people believe in them, so they can start to believe in themselves. Most of my students come from challenging lives at home and are at a disadvantage when they enter a traditional classroom. Every lesson must have relevance to their lives or they shut down. With so much going on at home and on the streets, it's hard to motivate them in the classroom, but it can be done! They want to learn just like any other student! They just need teachers who believe in them and the right resources to help them down that path.
