As a science educator, my goal is to make instruction sufficiently explicit so students can connect the scientific information they’ve learned to real-world occurrences around them. This will allow them to investigate phenomena they encounter on their own, form conclusions through experiments, and communicate with other people about science in real life. So how do I engage students in “making thinking visible”? One effective way to make student thinking visible is by using conceptual models. Representations of conceptual models include physical models, cognitive models, or mental models. The shopping list I started will help me get closer to achieving my goals. The list also includes basic school supplies that every one of my students will use throughout the school year. Types of learners I have in my class include linguistic, musical, kinesthetic, visual, auditory, logical. Some have multiple learning styles and strategies as well. With the basic school supplies on my shopping list, I will be able to find new and creative ways to present content and lessons that best suit the different learning styles. With more than one way to interact with content, students will have more options to learn and express their mastery. My goal is to make learning fun and instill a love of learning in all my students.
