Many students come to their math and science block expecting to read textbooks and complete computation exercises. It is our job as teachers to introduce them to the real world of math and science, and to give them opportunities to do the work of mathematicians and scientists: to ask questions, think creatively, and problem solve. Children are naturally curious about their world, and a classroom library full of engaging nonfiction titles is irresistible to them! Many of my students need to be encouraged to read across genres, and research shows that student achievement grows with more time spent reading independently. With your support, we can provide these students with high interest books about math, engineering, science, and technology. These books will improve fluency and comprehension, introduce students to possible careers in math and science, and support our curriculum across content areas.
