I teach three classes of 5th grade reading in an urban community which is comprised mainly of low-income students, which presents different backgrounds as well as different learning styles. My students have great personality and deserve every opportunity possible to help them succeed in life. I recognize that in today's society where everything is visual and easily accessible, the allure of reading a book may not be as exciting, but it is our responsibility to help students see that they can explore worlds outside of their everyday lives by getting lost in the pages of a book.
