As part of our science unit, An Animal’s Life, our students get excited about having the chance to watch chick grow and hatch. The materials we are asking for will service three 1st grade classrooms with equipment needed to incubate, look inside the egg to see development (candle) and watch them hatch. Witnessing the life cycle first hand is more rewarding than reading a book. The process can come alive with the use of an incubator that allows students to watch from start to finish. In the past, we have used incubators where the humidity was controlled by filling the reservoir with water. This requires trips in on the weekend, careful watching of the reservoir and opening the incubator when chicks are most delicate. Without maintaining proper humidity the hatching process is halted on the last three days. For chicks to hatch the humidity needs to be at a high, consistent level to soften the egg. When humidity is too low, the egg gets harder and the chick cannot peck his way out. The students are so excited to see the process start and then are disappointed when the project is unsuccessful. This is the reason we are asking for incubators with humidity control. The incubators we are hoping to purchase will help us track the humidity level and ensure that more chicks hatch. The look on our students' faces when they candle the eggs and see the early stages of development is something you can't find in a book. The most exciting part of our project is to see the chickens start to peck out of the egg. Instruction stops and the excitement grows as the real world meets the classroom.
