The importance of understanding our history is often overlooked, and reading from a textbook is simply not enough. Our fifth grade curriculum begins in the prehistoric period and goes all the way to the industrial revolution. Our nation went through a substantial amount of change during this time period. The books I am requesting are only a small part of our social studies units. Students will have access to primary and secondary sources, conduct research and complete group projects based on the novels and different units of study. Learning about history in an engaging format that captures each time period on a deeper level will help my students understand and become cognizant of the impact they have on their peers, their community, and their world. My classes will use these books throughout the year. I specifically chose books that capture each time period we will be studying. Students will be able to visualize and wonder about what it may have been like to live in a particular time period. They will make connections with the characters and their peers, as well as question choices people made. This will allow them to recognize how history has impacted their present lives. In turn, my hope is that they become more open and respectful of each other's differences, viewpoints and actions, as well as find a new love of reading historical fiction. What they do today may change their tomorrow!
