Nearly all of the students that attend our school have been unsuccessful at a previous school. For many of the students, our school is the last option for obtaining a high school diploma. The majority of the students are considered "At-Risk" (3 or more credits behind normal graduation track), and over 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunch services. The majority of my students have struggled in the areas of science and math, so many harbor a negative opinion of science in general. My challenge is to present science to my students in a way that sparks their interest, is very hands on and has real world applications. If my students see the value and use of science in their everyday life, they are much more likely to "buy in" and then the real learning can begin. It doesn't hurt if the lessons are also fun and creative.
