My students struggle with reading anything above a 3rd-grade lexile level. We have discovered, however, graphic novels such as Kindred resonate with them. Titles like Crush and Awkward also are geared right for their age group. They are excited about reading and come into class and get their books and are waiting for me to start. They fight over how many page. They are more willing to discuss what they have read. They show growth in retention. We need class sets of these novels to ensure that our students will have the chance to grow their abilities and to become lifelong readers!
