Decodable books are the necessary training wheels for beginning and struggling readers. They provide the right kind of practice students require to build the neuropathways of skilled readers. They are the bridge that helps students make the jump from learning phonics to reading authentic text. Additionally, they help beginner and struggling readers feel successful when they read, due to their highly decodable nature, which keeps them motivated. Because of this, my current small collection of decodable books are the most chosen and popular books in my classroom library because they build confident readers. If there is one thing a primary teacher can never have enough of, it is decodable books. Finding books that are highly decodable, engaging for our students, and suitable for a wide variety of ages is a must.
Most importantly, these books will help us implement evidence-based literacy instruction in our school so that ALL students can receive equitable literacy instruction.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and because decodable books create a feeling of success due to their highly decodable nature, they will especially help my struggling and beginner readers grow into strong readers, and help us close the achievement gap.
