Over the past eight years, our school has firmly established itself in the community because of the hard work of our students. They have committed to more time in the classroom, fulfilling high expectations, and getting results, which has enabled our students to make incredible strides. Two years ago I realized that despite all the academic gains there was a joy missing from our students, when Raymond called to ask if he could come for music class even though Saturday school was canceled. He said, “It gives me something to do, something that I feel good about”. I knew from that point I had to give my students a chance to create something they felt good about by exposing them to the world of music outside of their ear buds. In the past two years we have added music to our students day and seen a joy spring from our students. Serving about 40% of our students, our goal is to give 100% of our students a chance for authentic self-expression through music in the next 2-3 years.
