My students learn using the Orff Schulwerk process, meaning, when they come to music class, they transfer activities and words that are natural to their play into other, more musical activities. Students could be moving creatively or in an organized dance; playing melodies that are improvised or read from a simple score using pitched (e.g., xylophones, glockenspiels) and non-pitched (e.g., claves, cabasa, guiro, triangle) percussion; and singing songs and speaking rhythmically. While all percussive instruments are played by everyone, the recorder is reserved for 4th and 5th graders wherein they can compile everything they've learned thus far in music and apply it to note-reading. In our school district, 6th graders have the wonderful opportunity to extend their musical expertise into playing the ukulele. It doesn't take much to start playing music with the ukulele. It's amazing the music they can make together.
