My 76 seventh graders are some of the liveliest, most interesting people I have ever met. It is a privilege to teach them mathematics every day. Midway through the year, they are really starting to latch on to math, which is so exciting to see! With the state standardized testing approaching, it is high-stakes time for my students, who are members of a low-performing school district in a high needs community. Only about 50% of my students are predicted to graduate high school; those that do are anticipated to perform on an eighth-grade level. My students and I are determined to eradicate these dim predictions of the futures with hard work for the remainder of the school year that will carry into the rest of their scholastic careers.
