A professional, clean work environment invites students also to invest in their learning. I teach 9th Marine Science to urban students in a small public inner city school. The school has a strong design program and attracts students from all over the city, most of whom are eligible for free lunch. My class is aimed at preparing students to transition from middle-level to high school science. It is interdisciplinary and skills-based in nature, and helps students to weave together a mixture of ocean-related science ideas. Making real-world connections is often difficult for students and doing hands-on investigations in a professional science learning environment enables this kind of thinking.
