I have been a teacher in DC for eight years. For the first seven, I taught at a public neighborhood high school. My students inspired me. Though they often came to class with much baggage, they were very actively trying to overcome their circumstances and make something of themselves. I now teach at a high-poverty magnet school. I am glad I started where I did. You wouldn't know my looking at my new school that many of its youth were poor. But the struggles are still there. My work at my last school helped me recognize the unspoken indicators of stress and struggle that I might not have seen otherwise.
