I love teaching math and science to this diverse group of 7 and 8 year-olds! I always tell my students that 2nd grade is the best for math and science because it's the first year you know and can share lots of good "stuff": you finally know stuff about the world around you that you can share with your family, you know stuff that will impress your parents because they forgot some 2nd grade stuff, and stuff that is interesting and easy to learn more about. Our school's students are approximately 77% economically disadvantaged and the population is more than 70% Hispanic. The most recent math and textbook adoptions did not include student sets of bound books, but rather online versions. These are great, with wonderful enrichment and virtual lab activities, but most of my 45 students do not have regular access to any kind of tablet or computer. I want them to develop a 21st learner's thirst for more so they are always looking to answer the next "Why?" question.
