I teach at a public middle school that has been known for years as a preeminent Related Arts school that has won state and national recognition for our orchestral and choral programs. Last year our principal had a vision to expand our science department and put together a strong STEM program. This is our first year employing the nationally-recognized "Project Lead The Way" program at our school, and though it is a very intensive program to start, I see the results in our students' critical thinking skills after teaching PLTW for only one semester! PLTW focuses on the engineering aspect of STEM. My students are being challenged academically like never before, and they love every minute of my class, with many students asking me, "Can I stay for another period, this was awesome!" I teach sixth-eighth graders who come from all walks of life, socioeconomic status, gender, and with a varied background in their own educational levels - from 504 plans to IEP's, but all of them excited about PLTW!
