I teach a self-contained classroom of children with autism. These children present with various difficulties, behaviors and physical needs. My class this year consists of one kindergarten student, 2 first grade students and 3 second grade students. One of the second grade students in on-level in math and goes to a general education classroom each day for math instruction. Although he can read on a first grade level, he does not comprehend what he reads, therefore he is below grade level in reading, social studies, and science. My other second grade students are significantly below grade level in all subjects. One of my students is very verbal and understands much of what he hears, but he cannot process the printed word. The other second grade student has only been in class for a week. My first graders are both wonderful boys who are verbal, but need intensive speech therapy for life skills and articulation. The kindergarten student is bright with a promising future but is not yet on grade level.
