I work with 7th and 8th graders at a Title I middle school in Orlando that prepares low-income students for college. My students live in one of the poorest areas in the city, so it's up to us to give them a rich intellectual life. Each of the students in my class self-selects a novel to read both in class and at home. The majority of my students do not have access to young adult literature at home, so it falls to me to provide them with books that they'll be interested in, that will challenge them, and that they'll be begging to continue reading.
