Students with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Down Syndrome, other developmental disabilities, may have an impaired sensory system. Many times one or more senses are either over-stimuated or under-stimulated. This is believed to be the underlying reason for such behaviors as rocking, head-banging, hand-flapping and spinning. Sensory integration techniques, such as pressure can facilitate attention and awareness. Sensory integration is an “innate neurobiological process and refers to the integration and interpretation of sensory stimulation from the environment by the brain”. Sensory integration focuses primarily on three senses- tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive. These senses allow us to experience, interpret and respond to different stimuli in our environment. I have requested the following items: a sensory canoe, weighted items and tactile materials to help give my students the sensory stimulation they need in order to be successful. Occupational therapists have used deep pressure and weighted items help students feel safe and comfortable when they become over or under stimulated. The canoe allows students to feel the deep pressure that they are seeking. The deep pressure touch stimulation from weighted blankets produces seratonin in children, which can help them stay calm. The sensory items listed on this page will be used to provide students with sensory information which helps organize the central nervous system and assist the child in processing a more organized response to sensory stimuli, and will assist in the overall growth in social and academic performance. Thank you for your contribution to our students success!
