Our 4th grade classroom is located in East Oakland. 70% percent of the students are English language learners, and all qualify for free lunch. Together the students and I learn about the diversity of California's land and culture with a historical perspective. We start with the 4 distinct geographical regions and then spend a trimester learning about several of the indigenous tribes. The following trimester they learn about the effects of colonization and how modern day California was shaped and environmentally transformed by the Gold Rush. In all of our projects we integrate creative expression and art to encompass all styles of learning and express each unique point of view. We also take time to draw parallels that connect the past to the present. In this way we consider the roles individuals and communities play in shaping public life; and we are empowered as active agents in our own community.
